    There have been many outfalls designed with fixed-diameter ports that are suffering from reduced hydraulic capacity and dilution efficiency as a result of sediment and salt water intruding into the outfall thru the open ports. Many outfalls require cleaning or pigging every few years which costs owners significant amounts of money that need not be spent if the ports prevented backflow.
